The BBC News article reports:
"Our planet is being bombarded by high-energy particles unleashed by the strongest solar storm since 2005, scientists say. The charged particles are mostly a concern for satellites - which they can disrupt - and astronauts. But they can also cause communication problems for aircraft travelling near the poles.
The geomagnetic storm has been caused by a potent flare that erupted from the Sun at 0400 GMT on Monday. The effects are likely to be felt on Earth throughout Wednesday."

There is a marvellous exhibition at the British Library, Royal Manuscripts:The Genius of Illumination, of illuminated manuscripts collected by kings and queens of England between the ninth and the sixteenth centuries.
We have connected this with Brentford's tradition in vellum making.

In the early evening on February 2nd the Mayor Boris Johnson will switch on a laser sculpture at Watermans Theatre that will light up the night sky over Brentford.
The name of the sculpture is Geometry and it has been created by the brilliant French artist Félicie d'Estienne d'Orves
Following completion of the fantastic new pedestrian bridge linking Lots Ait Island to the Brentford shore, and major restoration work on the old boat building and repair facilities, the boatyard at Lots Ait will be re-opening for business in April 2012 as John’s Boat Works at Lots Ait.

The Photo GalleryLocated in the roads surrounding Kew Gardens station, in Station Parade, The Kew Village Market will after a very succesful trial last year become a permanent fixture on the first Sunday of every month, between 10am and 2pm, from February 5 onward.
A few weeks ago the Hurlingham cruise boat sailed past Brentford Dock and just struggled through the shallow water at low tide, off Julius Point. I was impressed how shallow the water was for it to sail in and I checked its details.
