Big Tops in Syon Park

No, the circus hasn't come to Syon Park. The fashion stores Top Shop, Top Man and Dorothy Perkins have pitched a bright blue big top next to Syon House for one of the biggest corporate events ever to take place on our neighbours' property.

Syon Park declined to give out information on what would be taking place, saying it was "private". However, our photographer managed to sneak past security guards to take this picture on Tuesday. Unofficial inquiries reveal that the event will be held on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Seventeen Saved from Rising Tide

On Saturday 12 March, the Chiswick RNLI lifeboat rescued 17 people from Chiswick Eyot just before it was covered by the rapidly-rising tide.

The party had walked across the river bed to the island from Chiswick Mall. They failed to notice the rising tide and were soon cut off. One of the party called 999. At 1.15pm the London Coastguard called out the Chiswick RNLI lifeboat at the nearby Chiswick Pier.

The rigid-inflatable lifeboat arrived within 5 minutes, landed on the island and the crew helped all 17 safely on board. By the time the lifeboat brought the survivors to shore, the island was under water.

On our part of the River Thames the tide takes approximately 8 hours to "go out" and 4 hours to "come in". During spring tides (which occur every fortnight) the river level can rise over 7 metres (24 ft) in 4 hours, i.e., 1.8 metres or 6 ft per hour.

Stick in the Muds

About 10 pm on Saturday 18th June, the RNLI Lifeboat, based at Chiswick Pier, rescued two teenage boys stuck up to their shoulders in the mud around Lot's Ait, the island just to the east of Julius Court.

Another Hotel Opens

On Thursday 7th July, the Holiday Inn at Brentford Lock welcomed its first guests. Rooms are available from £75 per night as a "special opening offer." Brentford now has three major hotels Holiday Inn, Premier Travel Inn and Travelodge.

Great Brentford Dock Mail Robbery Foiled

In the mornings, Royal Mail leaves bags of mail inside the Spa shop for later distribution on Brentford Dock by postmen. On the morning of Thursday 18th August, a postman noticed a bogus postman attempting to take a Royal Mail bag from the shop. Someone (?) shut the shop door thus detaining the bogus postman. The police and, or Royal Mail security were telephoned. Royal Mail security arrived first and then the police, who apprehended one man. Roy Branch and our security guard were also there.

A second man escaped in a car similar to that described in five recent robberies. On this occasion the registration number of the car was noted.
