Gardens
Brentford Dock is bordered by a lawned entrance on the north, Syon Park on the west and Kew Gardens on the south. There are communal gardens:
- between Otho and Nero Courts
- in front of Julius Court
- along the Thames riverside
- along the Brentford Creek riverside.
- at the confluence of the Thames and Brentford Creek.
In addition there is a grassed walk along the length of the Syon Park border. The upkeep of the communal gardens and other grounds is paid for from the service charge.
Some ground floor flats have an open plan garden at the front. Most of these gardens are lawns but a few contain hedges. Generally the upkeep of these gardens is paid for from the service charge. However some flats have adopted their front gardens. In such cases the flat owner must keep the garden in good order and pay for its upkeep.
Ground floor flats in Julius, Leo, Maurice, Numa and Servius Courts, the four houses and the ground floor maisonettes have private rear gardens.
Roads
Brentford Dock has three roads: Augustus Close, Justin Close and Dock Road. Augustus Close is owned by the London Borough of Hounslow; most of Justin Close and all of Dock Road is owned by the property owners of Brentford Dock.
Dock Road
Originally, the cobbled Dock Road was the only road access to Brentford Dock when it was a working dock. Today the still cobbled Dock Road provides access to Brentford High Street but is normally closed to motor vehicles by a barrier - although several businesses in Dock Road have right of vehicular access.
Augustus Close
Augustus Close is the sole road access to Brentford Dock. It runs from Brentford High Street and follows the old railway line into Brentford Dock. Just before the old mooring basin (now the marina) it turns south and then east. It is lined with mature trees.
The London Borough of Hounslow adopted the whole of Augustus Close and normal parking restrictions apply. There are no yellow lines on the majority of Augustus Close.
Justin Close
Justin Close runs from the bend in Augustus Close, follows the north side of the marina and terminates at Julius Court. The London Borough of Hounslow adopted part of Justin Close from the bend in Augustus Close to the pedestrian bridge between Nero and Romulus Courts. On this part normal parking restrictions apply. There are no yellow lines on the majority of Justin Close.
Sculpture Park
Seven or so sculptures, loaned to us by the artist, are on display throughout the grounds.
Wildlife
Brentford Dock is home to moorhens, ducks, Canada geese, herons, kingfishers, gulls, soaring birds and foxes. Parakeets live in the trees bordering Syon Park.

Housing
The housing on Brentford Dock was built between 1978 and 1980 for the Greater London Council and originally intended for local authority housing. It consists of 591 dwellings: 554 flats, 32 maisonettes and 5 houses.
However, only 90 of the first-built flats were let. As the rest of the 500 dwellings were built they were offered for private sale on 98 year leases from the GLC. Number 2 Augustus Close was designated the "Head Porter's House." It was recently occupied by the Estate Supervisor. By August 1999, 40 of the original 90 let flats had been purchased privately. This figure is likely to be higher today.
All the dwellings and grounds that make up the 26 acre site are managed by Brentford Dock Ltd., a management company wholly owned by the owners of the 590 dwellings. Each owner has one of the 590 £1-shares in Brentford Dock Ltd (one share per dwelling, excluding the Estate Supervisor's house). The London Borough of Hounslow owns a share for each of its currently-let flats.
In 1991, Brentford Dock Ltd. bought the freehold of most of the residential area and all of the commercial area of Brentford Dock. The LBOH retained the freehold on Leo, Maurice & Servius Courts and block 1A [numbers 1-16 & 47-62] of Galba Court. Consequently all shareholders now have a share in the freehold of Brentford Dock. New 999 year leases are being issued.
The commercial area consists of the marina, marina buildings (including clubhouse) and the general shop. The marina and the marina club are managed by two subsidiary companies of Brentford Dock Ltd.
Flats
One-Bedroom Flats
One-bedroom flats are available in all courts, except Marcus Court. One-bedroom flats are approximately 500 sq. feet and are mostly accessed directly from the walkway. The 15' 7" x 8' 5" bedroom is a very comfortable double, supplemented by large store cupboards in the hallway. A few have balconies.
Approximately half the one bedroom flats have an allocated parking space. A few have garages.
Two-Bedroom Flats
Two-bedroom flats are available in all courts. There are 16 designs of two-bedroom flats but the majority follow the same floor plan.
All two-bedroom flats have a balcony or small garden accessed from the lounge.
Two-bedroom flats are approximately 700 sq. feet and comprise two good sized double bedrooms, dining room, kitchen and bathroom/WC. Some owners have combined the bathroom and WC into one room with added shower. The wall between the lounge and bedroom is easily removed to provide a 19' 9" x 15' 9" reception room.
Most two-bedroom flats have a parking or garage facility.
Three-Bedroom Flats
Three-bedroom flats are available in all courts. There are eight designs of three-bedroom flats.
All upper-floor flats have a small entrance hall directly from the walkway and then stairs to the main accommodation above. This ensures privacy as no one walks directly by the living area windows.
Three-bedroom flats exceed 900 square feet. Most three-bedroom flats have a parking space or garage.
Four-Bedroom Flats
Four-bedroom flats are available on the ground floors of Galba, Numa, Otho and Romulus Courts.
Maisonettes
Three- and four-bedroom maisonettes (split-level flats) are available in Augustus Close.
Three-bedroom maisonettes exceed 1,100 square feet and comprise:
- on the ground floor: a reception room, kitchen and dining room, large garden and integral garage usually with parking for a further car on the driveway
- On the first floor: two double and one single bedrooms and bathroom.
Some owners have made the reception, dining area and kitchen totally open plan whilst others have combined the double and single bedroom to provide a larger master bedroom.
Four-bedroom maisonettes exceed 1,200 square feet and comprise:
- on the ground floor: short walkway and steps to first floor entrance, integral garage usually with parking for a further car on the driveway.
- on the first floor: double bedroom, single bedroom, WC and stairs leading to upper floor.
- on the upper floor: double bedroom, single bedroom, family bathroom, kitchen and reception/dining with a large terrace.
Popular adaptations are: Open plan dining and reception areas with patio door onto the terrace. Combining the double and single bedroom with the family bathroom to provide a large master bedroom with en-suite facilities.
Some maisonettes have an additional parking space in a nearby parking area.
Town Houses
There are just four two-storey, 3-bedroom town houses in Augustus Close, all with river views, private gardens. and private garages nearby.
