Paintings of Brentford from the 1960s
For sale from dealer John Iddon

by Ian Ridpath

Watercolour paintings of Brentford and its surroundings from half a century ago are on sale from a Richmond art dealer. They were painted by a local artist named Norman Twyman who studied at Hammersmith School of Building and Architecture and graduated from Hammersmith School of Art in 1950. He had solo shows and participated in group shows at Marble Hill and Hampton Hill galleries. He died in November 2003.

Dealer John Iddon told us this about the artist: “He was a graphic artist and model maker who worked on the Festival of Britain site and created numerous large dioramas for museums, but his passion was for painting. I remember him telling me that he'd go out at dawn to paint in order to catch that early morning milky mist that hung over the water. Most of of these paintings were done between the 1950s and 1970s.”

Brentford Dock residents will recognize the accompanying views of the canal near the footbridge, as well as Strand on the Green and Syon House.

The paintings are from about 9 x 12 up to 12 x 16 inches in size, with prices in the range of £500-£650.
