See the 'Poor, Poor St Lawrence Church' article for the church's glorious history and its sad demise.
I was wondering what exciting new uses there could be for the St Lawrence Church building, that would help to reinforce and energise Brentford’s unique character. It would be interesting to see if we could think of some creative possibilities which have some distinctive quality.
I would love to see St Lawrence Church used as a live recital space for classical, jazz, folk, music and poetry and literature readings. A place where top quality recitals can be seen and also recorded for TV, Radio, digital recordings and Internet channels.
A superb example of one church in North London that has achieved this is LSO St Luke’s on London’s Old Street, EC1.
An example of what the refurbished St Luke’s looks like, could be seen in the BBC4 programme, ‘The Story of Allegri’s Miserere’, on Friday 29th October, in the section where they sing in St Luke's is on Youtube
Maybe we could have the equivalent in West London? The BBC in Shepherd’s Bush and Sky at Osterley could be interested in using such a facility? Local companies like Glaxo could be interested in sponsoring such quality recitals? And maybe, as the London Symphony Orchestra has adopted St Luke’s, an ensemble may be interested in having St Lawrence’s as its base? Recording companies could be interested in making albums and videos of recitals?
It would be a joy for Brentford people and workers to be able to attend lunchtime and evening recitals and enjoy the natural acoustics and grandeur of this 500 year old building.
I wonder if it is a viable option?
